Make vs Zapier: cost per operation

Make calls itself ISO-certified, then hands the certificate to its own parent company

Make names two US zones on AWS EC2 and VPC with no region stated, claims itself ISO 27001 and SOC 2/3 certified, yet its own pages assign the SOC 2 to its hosts and the ISO 27001 to Celonis SE, its parent company, not to Make itself. Zapier hosts on AWS in the US by name, holds SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 as its own, though its Data Processing Agreement separately describes data as transferred to the US and elsewhere, leaving the two descriptions unreconciled. Scope compared, criterion by criterion. Checked 7 September 2026.

Make vs Zapier: scope compared, criterion by criterion — checked September 7, 2026
MakeZapier
What the tool answers
What it measures or produces
Make orchestrates scenarios (automated workflows) built from modules that process bundles (data packets): the unit of work is the module run against a bundle, not a dashboard or report.A Zap combines one trigger (e.g. receiving a new email, adding a row to a spreadsheet) and one or more actions (creating a contact, sending a message, updating a record), with fields mapped between steps.
The job it equips
The day-to-day user builds and runs scenarios in the visual builder; only the owner, admin and app dev organization roles can install and administer technical components (on-premise agent), and app dev builds custom apps.Zapier serves RevOps, Marketing, IT, HR, Sales, Support, Leaders and Executive Assistants. IT: user provisioning, security alert routing, tickets. Sales: lead routing and follow-ups via the CRM.
What it cannot tell you
Make can only report what its own log shows, and only if allowed. Retention: 7 days (Free), 30 (Core/Pro/Teams), 60 (Enterprise). The “Keep data confidential” setting drops the data but still shows a run happened.Structural limit: for a polling trigger, Zapier only learns an event occurred at the next check — 15 min (Free), 2 min (Professional), 1 min (Team, Enterprise). Only “instant” webhook triggers fire immediately.
Wiring the tools together
Number of apps
Contradiction on app count: the directory advertises 3,000+ (counter 3604 on 2026-09-07), but the product description says “1000+ standard apps.” Verified: Google Sheets, Slack, OpenAI (ChatGPT, Sora, Whisper).zapier.com/apps shows two figures the same day: “9,000+ apps” and “10,000+ connections” (2026-09-07). Not adjudicating. Depth: Sheets 8/23/9 (40 ops), Slack 13/31/9 (53), GA4 1 trigger/5 actions.
Billing unit
Credits since 2025-08-27 (1 operation=1 credit). Operation = module run on a bundle (5 emails=5 operations). Trigger = once/run, regardless of bundle count. Handled error=0. Make's AI often costs +1; third-party stays at 1.Unit=task (1/successful step). Excluded: triggers, Filters/Paths, errored steps, Tables/Forms, 6 apps (Formatter, Delay, Looping...). Rate: MCP 2, advanced AI 3, premium 5, Lead Router 5. Cap: Free 100, Pro 750, 2K/mo, annual on Enterprise; 3x max, then stop.
Logic available
Branching: routers, filters, aggregators. 5 handlers: Skip, Retry, Resume, Commit, Rollback. Failures replayed via “incomplete executions” (increasing backoff, 3 attempts by default); plus cycle cap and deactivation threshold.4 logic families: Filter & Paths, Sub-Zap & Looping, Schedule & Delay, Human in the Loop. Error handling: error handler (separate Success/Error paths, from Pro) and autoreplay (from Pro). Filters and paths cost no tasks.
Custom code
Two custom-code routes (2026-09-07): custom functions from Pro up (absent on Free/Core); custom apps on all five tiers, in IML (mustache-like, JS-like syntax). Free HTTP via the app directory. Python absent from docs tested.Code by Zapier: JS (Node 22) and Python 3.13 only. Runtime: 1s on Free, 30s on Pro/Team, 2min on Enterprise (up to 10min, not for Code triggers); 512MB everywhere. 1 task/step. Free-form webhooks from Pro, absent on Free.
Trigger frequency
Minimum interval between scheduled runs, by tier (2026-09-07): 15 min (Free), 1 min (Core, Pro, Teams, Enterprise) — no paid tier below a minute. Dedicated help page: navigation only (JS), unconfirmed.Minimum interval between two polling-trigger checks: 15 min (Free), 2 min (Professional), 1 min (Team and Enterprise). Instant webhook triggers run the Zap immediately. Recorded 2026-09-07.
Run history
Retention: 7 days (Free), 30 (Core/Pro/Teams), 60 (Enterprise), search from Pro. Failed-run replay via “incomplete executions” (off by default), manual/auto, deleted 30 days after resolution. Alert: “Errors Before Deactivation.”History: 29-69 days (7 days logs, 4 months backups); only Enterprise sets 7-30 days (24h). Manual replay of errors everywhere; other statuses/autoreplay: paid only. Email alert (4 frequencies), none if an error handler runs.
Self-hosting
No self-hosted edition published (AWS, five tiers). Only customer part: on-premise agent (relays to Make's cloud, Java 11+, owner/admin/app dev). Contradiction: help reserves it to Enterprise, pricing checks all five tiers.Self-hosting absent from the published options as of 2026-09-07: AWS-hosted service in the US, sole networking option = VPC Peering. No self-hostable license, on-premise image or “self-hosted” plan on these pages.
What comes out of it
Export formats
Only documented export: the JSON blueprint (three dots > export blueprint), import capped at 2 MB. No CSV, XLSX, PDF, Sheets or Looker Studio export published (pricing, blueprints page) as of 2026-09-07, and no per-plan cap.Account export is emailed as a .ZIP: workflows in “Zapfile.json,” run history via a CSV of download URLs. No per-plan cap and no PDF, XLSX, Looker Studio or Sheets export mentioned as of 2026-09-07.
Shareable reports
No scheduled report, public link or white-label feature is listed in the plan comparison (2026-09-07); only the JSON blueprint and “scenario templates” are documented as sharing. Dedicated help page: navigation only (JS).Only documented sharing: a Zap as a template via public link (“Zap URL”). “Only your team” is limited to Teams and Enterprise. No scheduled report and no white-labeling on the pages tested as of 2026-09-07.
API access
The Make API is included from the Core tier up, with a per-minute, per-organization quota: 60 (Core), 120 (Pro), 240 (Teams), 1,000 (Enterprise). Authentication uses an HTTP token or OAuth 2.0.Four public APIs (api.zapier.com): Trigger Inbox (real-time events), Actions (run stored actions), Connections, Workflow (embed Zaps). Auth via OAuth 2.0. No quota stated; “Powered by Zapier” requires an App Directory listing.
What it connects to
Native integrations
Make advertises 3,000+ apps, counter at 3604 results in “All Apps” (2026-09-07, JS page). Key verified connectors: Google Sheets, Slack, OpenAI (ChatGPT, Sora, Whisper); otherwise connection to any app with an API.The directory states 9,000+ apps (2026-09-07); the top three by popularity are Google Sheets, Gmail and Slack, followed by Google Calendar and Google Drive.
Google tools it connects to
Google Sheets is a native app in Make's directory as of 2026-09-07. Analytics, Ads, Search Console and Looker Studio did not appear in the rendered portion of the catalog (partial JS page): presence or absence inconclusive.Native confirmed: Sheets (8 triggers, 23 actions, 9 searches), GA4 (1 trigger, 5 actions incl. “Run Report”), + Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Forms, Docs. Ads, Search Console, Looker Studio absent from the pages retrieved.
Bringing your existing data across
No competitor migration tool, no field mapping, no migration assistance published (2026-09-07); only documented import: Make's own JSON blueprint. Named assistance, Enterprise-only: a Make Value Engineers program.Import/export in JSON only, restricted to Team and Enterprise; connections must be reconnected and Zaps turned back on after import. No migration from a competitor and no automatic field mapping as of 2026-09-07.
Getting started, and the fine print
Support
Support by tier: Free, 90-day expert access; Core/Pro, support from experts; Teams, priority guidance from consultants; Enterprise, 24/7 from senior specialists — 24/7 opens at Enterprise. Language/hours not published elsewhere.Support: Free (help); Pro (email<8h, chat from 2,000 tasks); Team (email<1h, chat<1min); Enterprise (<30min, TAM). Two pages diverge on weekends: “24 hours a day including weekends” vs “five days a week, 12 hours on weekends.”
Where the data is hosted
Hosting is identical across all five tiers: “AWS (EU/North America),” private EC2 instances (VPC), cluster over two zones; Enterprise runs in a separately managed AWS environment. No named region, no way to choose (2026-09-07).Hosting: AWS, United States (security page), TLS 1.2+ in transit, AES-256 at rest, no EU residency. The DPA is broader: data processed in the US “and other jurisdictions” where Zapier operates. Not adjudicating.
What happens if you leave
The contract: no refunds, fees non-cancelable once ordered, auto-renewal unless canceled before the charge. Export is possible only during the subscription. The DPA sets 30 days post-termination to destroy or return personal data.No refund window: purchases non-refundable (monthly, annual), even post-trial; cancellation stays active until cycle end. Zap history: 7 days logs, 29-69 days in-account, up to 4 months backups; export available.
Minimum seats billed
None. All five tiers show unlimited users, with access shared to collaborate on workflows; billing is on monthly credits, not seats, and no minimum is published (neither on the pricing page nor in the contract).Free and Professional: individual plans, 1 seat, no minimum beyond that. Team: 25 users included in the entry price. Enterprise: unlimited users. No per-additional-seat price published as of 2026-09-07.
Data residency and regulated cloud
Make names 2 US zones (us1, us2.make.com), AWS EC2/VPC, no region. Contradiction: it claims itself ISO27001+SOC2/3-certified, yet assigns SOC2 to the hosts and the ISO cert to Celonis SE. FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud, BAA absent.Zapier: hosted on AWS in the US (named); own certifications SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3. The DPA instead speaks of data 'transferred' to the US and elsewhere — both versions stand. No HIPAA BAA; FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud absent.
What it costs
The entry price and what it includes
First paid tier: Core, USD 12/month for 10,000 credits/month (2026-09-07). It lifts 5 Free limits: unlimited scenarios, minute-level triggers, API at 60 calls/min, among others. Beyond 10,000 credits/month, more must be purchased. Vendor publishes its grid in dollars.Free: $0/mo, 100 tasks/mo, 1 user, 15-min interval, Zaps capped at 2 steps. Professional: from $19.99/mo (1 user, 750 tasks/mo) — multi-step Zaps, unlimited Premium apps, webhooks, filters, paths. Tier ends when exceeded. Vendor publishes its grid in dollars.
What pushes the bill up
Cost driver: credits. Make's AI often costs +1 credit (variable); quotas scale with credits bought — 10,000/month = 5 GB transfer, 10 MB storage, 10 MB incomplete executions (2 GB max), webhook queue 667 (10,000 max). Credits lost at term end, alerts 75/90%.Three hidden costs: overage → pay-per-task (rate unpublished), Zaps stop at 3x (Pro 750→2,250 max); pricier steps (MCP 2, advanced AI 3, premium AI 5, Lead Router 5); Team from $69/mo (25 seats), chat only from 2,000 tasks.
Sales tax and nexus
Make (Celonis, Inc.) sells in its own name, charges sales tax due upfront (MSA March 2026); exemption available on request (updated 2026-01-16). No state list, calc basis or nexus owner; pricing page shows USD prices with no tax.Zapier itself charges US sales tax based on the ZIP code. No state list or nexus threshold published; exemption needs a state-specific certificate (e.g., Form STE-1 for Alabama). No calculation feature for customer sales.
Procurement and invoicing
Contract entity Celonis, Inc., NY law/courts. Core/Pro/Teams: card, wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.), US ACH — $0/12/21/38/month for 10,000 credits, 15% off annually. Non-card billing = Enterprise. No PO, net-30, or W-9.Invoice billing opens only at Enterprise; below that, only self-service (card, PayPal, ACH from a US bank account). No purchase order or net-30 named. A W-9 is provided, plus a US Certificate of Tax Residence (Form 6166).

Key takeaways

Make’s certification belongs to the parent company, not the product

Make names two US zones, us1 and us2 on make.com, hosted on AWS EC2 and VPC with no specific region stated. Make claims itself ISO 27001 and SOC 2 or SOC 3 certified, yet its own pages assign the SOC 2 to its hosts and the ISO 27001 to Celonis SE, its parent company — not to Make itself. FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud, and a HIPAA business associate agreement are all absent.

Zapier names the US, then adds “and elsewhere” in its own contract

Zapier hosts on AWS in the United States by name, with SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 as its own certifications. Its Data Processing Agreement separately describes data as “transferred” to the US and other jurisdictions where Zapier operates — both descriptions stand, side by side, unreconciled. No HIPAA business associate agreement is named, and FedRAMP, StateRAMP, and GovCloud stay absent.

Selling in its own name still doesn’t mean Make will name a state

Make, selling as Celonis, Inc., charges sales tax due upfront, with exemption available only on request; no state list, calculation basis, or nexus owner is published anywhere on its pricing page. Zapier charges US sales tax directly, calculated by ZIP code, but names no state list or nexus threshold either, and claiming an exemption requires a certificate specific to the buyer’s own state, Alabama’s Form STE-1 among them.

One vendor supplies a tax-residency form the other never mentions

Make, contracted through Celonis, Inc. under New York law, accepts card, digital wallets, and US ACH on its Core, Pro, and Teams tiers — zero, twelve, twenty-one, and thirty-eight dollars a month for ten thousand credits, fifteen percent off annually — reserving any other billing method for Enterprise, with no purchase order, net-30 term, or W-9 published. Zapier reserves invoice billing for Enterprise too, but below that offers self-service by card, PayPal, or ACH from a US bank account, and supplies a W-9 on request alongside a US Certificate of Tax Residence, IRS Form 6166 — a document Make’s own pages never mention.

Neither vendor’s own app count agrees with its own documentation

Make’s directory advertises over three thousand apps, with a counter reading three thousand six hundred four the day it was checked, while its own product description states “a thousand-plus standard apps” instead. Zapier’s own directory shows both “nine thousand-plus apps” and “ten thousand-plus connections” on the very same page, on the same day, with neither vendor settling its own number.

The entry price buys a different unit of work entirely

Make’s first paid tier, Core, costs twelve US dollars a month for ten thousand credits, one credit per module run against a bundle of data. Zapier’s Free tier costs nothing for a hundred tasks a month and one user, with its Professional tier starting at nineteen dollars and ninety-nine cents for seven hundred fifty tasks — a different metering unit again, one that neither vendor’s own certification confusion has any bearing on.

jordan@bulldozer-collective.com
Does Make publish which US states it collects sales tax in?
No: Make, sold under the entity Celonis, Inc., charges sales tax due upfront with exemption available on request, but publishes no state list, calculation basis or nexus owner, and its pricing page shows USD prices with no tax shown. Zapier likewise charges US sales tax based on the ZIP code with no state list or nexus threshold, requiring a state-specific certificate such as Form STE-1 for Alabama to claim exemption.
Can Make be self-hosted instead of run from its cloud?
No: Make publishes no self-hosted edition across any of its 5 tiers, running only on AWS; the sole customer-side piece is an on-premise agent that relays to Make’s own cloud, and even that is contradicted — help pages reserve it to Enterprise while pricing checks it on all 5 tiers. Zapier is the same: no self-hostable license or on-premise image exists, its service running on AWS in the United States with VPC Peering as the only networking option.
Who does Make credit its ISO certification to?
Make names two US zones (us1 and us2.make.com) on AWS with no region disclosed, and claims itself ISO 27001 and SOC 2/3 certified — yet assigns the SOC 2 certification to its hosts and the ISO certificate to its own parent company, Celonis SE, not to Make itself. FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud and a HIPAA BAA are all absent. Zapier holds its own SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3, hosted on AWS in the US, but likewise has none of those four.
