Klaviyo charges US sales tax on its own invoice with no state list published, and leaves nexus for whatever the merchant sells to the merchant alone. Shopify runs two separate planes: it taxes its own subscription invoice across all 50 states plus DC and Puerto Rico, and separately sells Shopify Tax, a calculator spanning more than 11,000 US jurisdictions, while nexus for the merchant’s own sales still lands on the merchant either way — and none of it applies unless that merchant already pays for a Shopify plan starting at $39 a month. Scope compared, criterion by criterion. Checked 14 September 2026.

Klaviyo taxes its own invoice using the billing address, but publishes no list of which states it collects in, and its terms hand nexus for whatever the merchant actually sells to the merchant with no further comment. Shopify keeps the two questions apart: the platform charges sales tax on its own subscription invoice across all fifty states plus DC and Puerto Rico, and it separately sells Shopify Tax, a calculation engine spanning more than eleven thousand US tax jurisdictions, to help the merchant charge tax on its own orders — but economic nexus, the determination of where that merchant owes tax in the first place, stays the merchant’s own compliance problem under either vendor.
None of the eleven automation templates, the customer segments or the send volume matter if the store behind them has no active paid Shopify plan, no configured payment provider and no Online Store channel: a free trial or a Paused and Build account cannot message a single subscriber. The app listing calls Shopify Email available on “all” Shopify plans, while the pricing and admin documentation restrict it to four named tiers — Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus — starting at thirty-nine dollars a month billed monthly; Shopify publishes both statements and reconciles neither.
Klaviyo bills on two axes at once, active profiles and email volume, with mobile messaging split into its own dollar subscription and three ways to handle an overage: pay for the extra volume, accept an automatic tier upgrade, or stop sending. Shopify Email counts only recipients: ten thousand emails free every month, then one dollar per thousand up to three hundred thousand, sixty-five cents per thousand to seven hundred fifty thousand and fifty-five cents per thousand beyond that, with no rollover of unused volume and abandoned-checkout automations always exempt from the charge.
Klaviyo documents five expected lifecycle scenarios by name — abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back — on top of three more. Shopify Email publishes eleven automation templates as of September fourteenth, twenty twenty-six, covering browse, cart and checkout abandonment, a welcome discount, a post-purchase thank-you, an upsell, a win-back, a birthday, a VIP flow and a drive-to-retail nudge, but no replenishment template appears anywhere on that list.
Klaviyo names its own annual third-party audits against SOC 2 and ISO 27001, adding ISO 27017, PCI DSS and CCPA badges under its own name; HIPAA and ISO 27701 are absent from that page. Shopify Email carries no certification of its own: what shows up — PCI DSS Level 1, SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3 and SOC 1 Type 2 — belongs to the Shopify platform as a whole, with ISO 27001 absent, and no US hosting country or cloud provider is named on any page tested as of September fourteenth, twenty twenty-six.
Closing a Klaviyo account erases the data immediately, and the vendor’s own export downloads stay listed for only thirty days, so the export has to happen before that closure. Shopify keeps store data, and by extension anything routed through Shopify Email, for two full years after the account closes, under a no-refund policy stated directly in its terms of service, sections five point ten and fourteen point four two.
