Ahrefs vs SE Ranking: coverage per dollar

SE Ranking sells through a Delaware entity, then hosts your data with no US region at all

A USD-paying SE Ranking customer contracts with SER Acquisition Inc., a Delaware entity governed by California law, yet the product itself runs on Google LLC, AWS EMEA, and Hetzner infrastructure with no US region named anywhere, and its only US-specific credential is an annual self-assessed Data Privacy Framework filing rather than a third-party audit. Ahrefs also names no US region, hosting on AWS with a subprocessor in the US and Singapore, and its own SOC 2 is still only planned rather than issued. Scope compared, criterion by criterion. Data residency and regulated cloud
A USD-paying customer contracts with SER Acquisition Inc. (the “US Branch,” Delaware, governed by California law); hosting, kept separate, runs through Google LLC, AWS EMEA, and Hetzner with no US region named. No SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, or HIPAA is published: the only US credential is an annual self-assessment of Data Privacy Framework compliance, not a third-party audit.Ahrefs places data in the US, no region named, hosted on AWS (sub-processor in USA/Singapore). No certification of its own; SOC 2 only planned. FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud, HIPAA/BAA absent from all 4 pages tested 2026-09-07.
What it costs
The entry price and what it includes
$103.20 per month billed annually: ten projects, one seat, 2,000 daily keywords, and only six months of historical data$29 per month on Starter: 200 credits, 250 rows per report, no export and no additional users
What pushes the bill up
Everything bills separately: keywords, seats, articles, locations, export rows and API credits, plus $69 for white labellingAny user going past five credits triggers an automatic $20, after which credits are bought back in batches of five hundred
Sales tax and nexus
The Terms shift all sales tax to the customer, without stating who bears nexus; the FAQ names only VAT, never “sales tax,” “state,” or “W-9.” No state list or per-jurisdiction calculation published, nor tax on the pricing page.Ahrefs charges sales tax on top of the US price, in a list of states that includes Texas, New York and Washington DC; the table was not legible enough to count them. No local rates published, and nexus is left to the buyer.
Procurement and invoicing
Core ($129/mo, $103.20 annual) and Growth ($279/mo, $223.20 annual) via Stripe, annual paid upfront; only Enterprise goes to sales. Otherwise: bank transfer or direct debit, by country/currency. Invoice, net-30, ACH, W-9 absent.Non-card billing exists only at Enterprise (USD 1,499/month, annual commitment): help center names invoice or wire, pricing page only wire — both versions reported. Below that, card only; PO, net-30, ACH, W-9 absent.

Key takeaways

The company on the contract isn’t the company holding the data

A USD-paying SE Ranking customer signs with SER Acquisition Inc., described as the “US Branch,” incorporated in Delaware and governed by California law. The hosting behind that contract, kept as a separate matter entirely, runs through Google LLC, AWS EMEA, and Hetzner — and none of the three is named as running in a US region.

SE Ranking’s only US credential is a form it fills out itself

No SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, or HIPAA business associate agreement appears anywhere on SE Ranking’s published pages. The one US-specific credential it does claim is an annual self-assessment of Data Privacy Framework compliance — a filing SE Ranking completes about itself, not an audit a third party has signed off on.

Ahrefs names the US, then adds Singapore in the same breath

Ahrefs states it places data in the United States, without naming a specific region, hosted on AWS. Its own list of subprocessors names both the United States and Singapore, and its SOC 2 certification is, by its own account, still only planned. FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud, and a HIPAA business associate agreement are all absent from the four pages tested.

Sales tax is a customer problem at SE Ranking, a collected one at Ahrefs

SE Ranking’s Terms shift all US sales tax onto the customer without ever stating who carries nexus responsibility; its FAQ mentions only VAT, never the words “sales tax,” “state,” or “W-9.” No state list and no per-jurisdiction calculation appears anywhere, not even on the pricing page itself. Ahrefs, by contrast, does add sales tax on top of its listed price, in a state list naming Texas, New York, and Washington DC, though the rest of that list was too illegible to count.

Buying SE Ranking never requires talking to anyone, until Enterprise

SE Ranking’s Core plan, at a hundred twenty-nine dollars a month or a hundred three dollars and twenty cents billed annually, and its Growth plan, at two hundred seventy-nine dollars a month or two hundred twenty-three dollars and twenty cents annually, both run through Stripe with the year paid upfront. Only Enterprise involves a sales conversation at all; below it, bank transfer or direct debit exists by country and currency, but invoice, net-30, ACH, and a W-9 are absent from the pages published. Ahrefs opens non-card billing only at Enterprise too, one thousand four hundred ninety-nine dollars a month on an annual commitment, with invoice or wire depending on which of its own pages you read.

The entry price gap says nothing about which one actually answers the residency question

SE Ranking’s entry tier costs a hundred three dollars and twenty cents a month billed annually: ten projects, one seat, two thousand daily keywords, and only six months of historical data. Ahrefs’ Starter tier costs twenty-nine dollars a month for two hundred credits and two hundred fifty rows per report — a far lower number, though neither entry price answers the residency or credential questions raised above.

Does SE Ranking host its data in a named US region?
No: SE Ranking’s US entity is a Delaware US Branch, but hosting runs through Google LLC, AWS EMEA, and Hetzner, with no US region named and no SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, or HIPAA. Ahrefs says it hosts in the US, also with no region named, and has only a planned SOC 2 of its own. For a buyer needing FedRAMP, StateRAMP, or a HIPAA BAA, neither vendor delivers one.
Which US states does Ahrefs list when charging sales tax?
Ahrefs charges sales tax on top of the US price in states that include Texas, New York, and Washington DC, with no local rates published. SE Ranking shifts all sales tax to the customer without naming a state or nexus, and its FAQ names only VAT. For a US buyer, Ahrefs at least documents named states.
Can a buyer pay SE Ranking by invoice below its Enterprise tier?
No: Core and Growth run through Stripe with annual billing paid upfront, or wire transfer by country; only Enterprise reaches a sales conversation, and invoice, net-30, ACH, and W-9 are absent. Ahrefs opens non-card billing only at Enterprise, 1,499 dollars per month annually. Below Enterprise, both require a card.
