SE Ranking vs Semrush: the price-coverage trade-off

Semrush’s only threshold for paying by wire is “depends on account value”

Semrush opens check or wire payment to annual subscriptions only, at a threshold it defines solely as “depends on account value,” and even then an actual invoice requires a signed Order carrying 1.5 percent monthly late interest. SE Ranking publishes no invoice, net-30, ACH, or W-9 option at any tier below Enterprise, running its Core and Growth plans entirely through Stripe instead. Scope compared, criterion by criterion. Getting started, and the fine print
Where the data is hosted
No country stated for product data. The processor list names Hetzner in Germany, AWS in Luxembourg and Google in the United StatesUnited States according to the security page, but the official subprocessor list puts AWS in the United States and Ireland
What happens if you leave
No refund of unused funds unless the service failed. Projects may be deleted after sixty days of account inactivityRefund within 7 days, data kept for 30 days
Minimum seats billed
One manager seat on Core, three on Growth, the next from $16. Shared logins are explicitly forbidden by the termsNone: one seat included on every plan. The next seat costs $45, $80 or $100 per month, and three at most
Data residency and regulated cloud
A USD-paying customer contracts with SER Acquisition Inc. (the “US Branch,” Delaware, governed by California law); hosting, kept separate, runs through Google LLC, AWS EMEA, and Hetzner with no US region named. No SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, or HIPAA is published: the only US credential is an annual self-assessment of Data Privacy Framework compliance, not a third-party audit.Semrush stores data in the US (AWS, GCP), no region named. Only cert of its own: PCI DSS Level 1 (data-center certs are the hosts'). SOC2, ISO27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud, HIPAA/BAA absent; AWS listed in “USA, Ireland”.
What it costs
The entry price and what it includes
$103.20 per month billed annually: ten projects, one seat, 2,000 daily keywords, and only six months of historical data$139.95 per month on Pro, or $1,408 the first year on annual billing: 5 websites tracked and 500 keywords
What pushes the bill up
Everything bills separately: keywords, seats, articles, locations, export rows and API credits, plus $69 for white labellingThe per-tier caps, from 5 to 40 sites and 500 to 5,000 tracked keywords, then Local, Social and Trends billed separately
Sales tax and nexus
The Terms shift all sales tax to the customer, without stating who bears nexus; the FAQ names only VAT, never “sales tax,” “state,” or “W-9.” No state list or per-jurisdiction calculation published, nor tax on the pricing page.Semrush itself collects and remits US sales tax (nexus via PA/MA/TX offices), 24 jurisdictions, down to local level (1% Connecticut to 15% Chicago). Exemption: nonprofits only. ToS “exclusive of tax” vs FAQ “tax included”.
Procurement and invoicing
Core ($129/mo, $103.20 annual) and Growth ($279/mo, $223.20 annual) via Stripe, annual paid upfront; only Enterprise goes to sales. Otherwise: bank transfer or direct debit, by country/currency. Invoice, net-30, ACH, W-9 absent.Card is the only self-service path. Check/wire (US) open to annual subscriptions only, no dollar threshold (“depends on account value”). Invoice only via a signed “Order”; late interest 1.5%/month. PO, W-9, ACH, net-30 absent.

Key takeaways

Semrush names a threshold, then refuses to name the number

Semrush restricts its self-service billing to card only; check or wire payment opens for annual subscriptions, but only above a threshold the vendor states simply as “depends on account value,” with no dollar figure published anywhere. Getting an actual invoice requires a signed document Semrush calls an “Order,” and late payment on it draws interest of one and a half percent a month. Purchase orders, a W-9, ACH, and net-30 terms are all absent.

SE Ranking skips the question by never offering the option

SE Ranking’s Core plan, at a hundred twenty-nine dollars a month or a hundred three dollars and twenty cents billed annually, and its Growth plan, at two hundred seventy-nine dollars a month or two hundred twenty-three dollars and twenty cents annually, both run through Stripe with the year paid upfront. Only Enterprise involves a sales conversation at all; below it, bank transfer or direct debit exists by country and currency, but invoice, net-30, ACH, and a W-9 are absent from the pages published.

Neither vendor collects sales tax the same way as the other

SE Ranking’s Terms shift every dollar of US sales tax onto the customer without stating who carries nexus; its FAQ mentions only VAT, never the words “sales tax,” “state,” or “W-9.” Semrush takes the opposite path, collecting and remitting tax itself in twenty-four jurisdictions, at rates from one percent in Connecticut to fifteen percent in Chicago — though its own Terms of Service call the price exclusive of tax while its FAQ calls it included.

One credential is self-assessed, the other is only planned

SE Ranking’s hosting runs through Google LLC, AWS EMEA, and Hetzner, with no US region named and no SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, or HIPAA published; its only US-specific credential is an annual self-assessment of Data Privacy Framework compliance, not a third-party audit. Semrush states its data sits in the US, on AWS and GCP, with PCI DSS Level 1 as its own certification and SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud, and HIPAA all absent.

The price gap widens further once each plan’s cap is reached

SE Ranking’s entry tier, a hundred three dollars and twenty cents a month annually, includes ten projects, one seat, two thousand daily keywords, and six months of history; past it, keywords, seats, articles, locations, export rows, and API credits each bill separately, plus sixty-nine dollars for white labeling. Semrush’s Pro tier costs a hundred thirty-nine dollars and ninety-five cents a month, or one thousand four hundred eight dollars the first year annually, for five sites and five hundred keywords, with its own per-tier caps pushing the bill up from there.

What dollar threshold does Semrush require before accepting a wire payment?
None is stated: Semrush accepts check or wire only for annual US subscriptions, and the only rule given is that it depends on account value, with no figure attached. Card is otherwise the sole path, and invoicing needs a signed Order, carrying 1.5 percent late interest a month. SE Ranking offers no invoice, net-30, or W-9 either.
How many US tax jurisdictions does Semrush collect sales tax across?
Semrush itself collects US sales tax across 24 jurisdictions, with nexus through its Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Texas offices, and rates from 1 percent in Connecticut to 15 percent in Chicago; only nonprofits are exempt. SE Ranking, by contrast, shifts all sales tax to the customer without naming a state or nexus.
Does Semrush hold any regulated-cloud certification like FedRAMP?
No: Semrush stores data in the US across AWS and GCP with no region named, holding only PCI DSS Level 1 in its own name. SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, StateRAMP, GovCloud, and a HIPAA BAA are all absent. SE Ranking is no further along: none of these certifications is published there either.
